Which Style of Samba to Choose?

There are three kinds of Samba: traditional Brazilian Samba, modern Ballroom Samba, and Samba de Gafieira. Make sure to ask the studio listing the lessons which style they are teaching.

Brazilian Samba

Brazilian Samba is usually danced by a woman or a group of women in exotic costumes with feather headresses. Below is an example of Brazilian Samba.

Ballroom Samba

Ballroom Samba is one of the five Latin dances in Ballroom Dancesport and is always danced with a partner. Below is an example of Ballroom Samba:

Samba de Gafieira

Samba de Gafieira is another elegant partner ballroom dance based on the samba musical rhythm, though it is quite different from the International Ballroom Samba. It can be danced to various types of samba rhythms such as Bossa Nova, Choro or Samba Cano. This beautiful dance has created its own identity after much influence from other dance styles such as Tango and Bolero. It originated in the 1930s as a social dance in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and through the years it has evolved to becoming a samba style that is known for its grace and cheeky playfulness!
